How to control electric heating element

I’m just considering getting into building a still and I have a question, I have 1/2 barrel keg and trying to figure the best heat source. I am considering an electric heating element similar to those used in hot water heaters and need to know how to control the heat if I do decide to go this route. I would appreciate any tips or other advice on building the still using the 1/2 barrel keg.

Yes, this is a very sensible question, since most do-it-yourselfers don't understand the principles of distillation and therefore try to regulate the wrong parameter.
In fact, the proper parameter you have to regulate is the flow rate of the distillate. This flow rate depends on how strong the content in the kettle is boiling. It should boil moderately (recognizable by the sound), not too strong or too less. So, if flow rate is too strong, reduce the heat a bit, if too less, give more heat.
The wrong (!) parameter to regulate is the temperature of the steam. This temperature tells you the actual alcohol content of the distillate which you cannot (!) change by the heat source. The alcohol content decreases in the scope of the distillation, you can't influence this behavior.

I wish much success!
