Amount of water - Paolo Santo

I have enough Palo Santo wood to fill the still with small chunks (approximate size 1 cm pieces.) How much water would you recommend for the Leonardo Classic to do a steam distillation? Also, do you recommend soaking the Palo Santo wood
pieces for a certain period of time before attempting the distillation?

I would recommend 1.5 liters. It was years ago when we distilled Palo Santo and I didn’t write anything in my record if the material absorbes steam or not. I suppose you could also use only 1 liter to receive a little bit a higher yield, but the first time it’s better to be on the safe side, so use 1.5 liters. Of course you could also soak the pieces in water first (for about 24 to 48 hours), in this case I’m sure 1 liter of water in the kettle would be sufficient. In our attempt we used dry pieces without soaking them first and it worked very well.
